LG Display Introduces FLiPP OLED Technology, Improving Brightness By Up To 1.6X With Longer Lifespan
Compared to the conventional OLED technology, the FLiPP brings several benefits while also reducing the manufacturing costs.
LG Display has unveiled a new OLED manufacturing technology called FLiPP, which stands for FMM-Less Innovative Pixel Patterning. The new technology brings several improvements compared to the traditional FMM, or Fine Metal Mask, technique in producing RGB OLED displays. As per the company, the new technology brings superior brightness compared to FMM and also increases the panel lifespan significantly.

Unlike conventional OLED production, which uses extremely fine metal to selectively deposit red, green, and blue organic materials, the new technique uses a patterning process based on photolithography. The process involves coating the RGB materials sequentially, followed by precise positioning, and then using a precision ultraviolet light to remove unnecessary areas during the pixel-patterning process.
LG says that large metal masks can sag under their own weight, which can cause alignment problems and color-mixing defects. FMMs also need to be produced for different panel sizes and resolutions, which adds manufacturing complexity and cost. With FLiPP, the aperture ratio of OLED pixels can be increased by approximately 55% compared with panels produced using FMM under identical conditions.

This allows the FLiPP to reach 1.6 times higher brightness, 2.4 times longer lifespan, and 13% lower power consumption compared to FMM. However, one big advantage is the manufacturing flexibility. Conventional FMM production faces limitations when working with large mother-glass substrates because the size of the metal mask is restricted. On the other hand, FLiPP allows RGB OLED patterning on a large substrate without relying on these metal plates.

LG Display is showcasing the FLiPP at IMID 2026 in Busan, but it hasn't announced any specific commercial products using FLiPP and hasn't provided a timeline for when consumers can expect to see the new technology in displays.
